Creating a decluttering vision

Spring has spring! The blossoming flowers and little green buds are a sweet reminder that in the cycle of life, there are times to let go and times to renew. The ritual of spring cleaning provides us with the opportunity to start a decluttering ritual.

I want to talk to day about Creating a Vision, step one in the Open Space Design decluttering process. So why have a vision? Having a vision will help you stay focused, keep you inspired and energized, hold you accountable. Plus it just plain feels good to have clarity about what you want to create!

So what do you want to create? Here are some practical tools for getting clarity on your vision.

CREATING A VISION

Whether you are new to decluttering or have been engaged in a decluttering ritual for years, here are 5 ways to get started today with creating your vision, the first step in the Open Space Design Process.

  1. Start a gratitude list. Notice what you are grateful for, and place your attention there. What you pay attention to will grow, so pay attention to what is working! It may sound counterintuitive when we’re talking about getting rid of the things that are not working, but trust me, it works! Spend 5 minutes each morning and evening writing down 10 things you are grateful for. Bonus points if you share it with others and notice throughout the day. Noticing and appreciating what you love is also a good way to gain clarity about what you do not.

  2. Create a “Yes Vision Board”. Throw up a large sheet of paper on your wall. Every time you notice something you love, write it down. Spend a few minutes after your gratitude practice reading through your yeses, and adding to them each day. Notice what you love about your day, what you love about the people around you, what you love about yourself and how you show up in the world. Collect all these yeses over time and celebrate them!

  3. Create a strategic plan from your vision. This is an important one! Mindset, emotions, and good vibes can get you pretty far, but you’ll get much further if your vibes are paired with a strategic, actionable, measurable plan and goals.

  4. Celebrate your success! Notice when you are practicing a new habit, celebrate when you’ve reached a goal, and notice all the little ways your attitude is shifting. Share your successes with friends, or write them on your yes board. As often as you get discouraged and frustrated, make sure to practice celebration and noticing how you’re fabulous twice as much!

  5. Revisit and Revise. Know that decluttering is an ongoing process. Reflect regularly on your vision and progress. Give yourself grace when you do things imperfectly, and own up when you know you could do better. Learn from your mistakes and trust that you are making progress, no matter what pace you are moving.

As always, make sure to enjoy the process and appreciate and love yourself! You are fabulous and doing good work!
